Spatially varying mass function of MACHOs in the galactic halo and interpretation of microlensing results

چکیده

The gravitational microlensing experiments in the direction of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) predict a large amount of white dwarfs (∼ 20%) filling the galactic halo. However, the predicted white dwarfs have not been observed at the galactic halo. To interpret the microlensing results and resolving the mentioned problems, we use the hypothesis of spatially varying mass function of MACHOs, proposed by Kerins & Evans (1998) (hereafter KE). However the KE model is not compatible with the duration distribution of events (Rahvar 2004a). Here we use more realistic power-law model of MF, dn/dm ∝ m for the MACHOs of halo. The index of MF in this model changes from −2.7 for stars with m > 1M⊙ at the central part of galactic halo to the substellar regime with an upper limit of −1 at the edge of halo. We show that in contrast to the abundant brown dwarfs of galactic halo, heavy MACHOs can be responsible for the microlensing events in the direction of LMC.

Microlensing by the Halo MACHOs with Spatially Varying Mass Function

The main aim of microlensing experiments is to evaluate the mean mass of massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) and the mass fraction of the Galactic halo made by this type of dark matter. Statistical analysis shows that by considering a DiracDelta mass function (MF) for the MACHOs, their mean mass is about that of a white dwarf star. This result is, however, in discrepancy with other observatio...

Lensing Budget in the Dominate Brown Dwarfs of Halo: A Possible Solution for the Microlensing Problems

For searching gravitational microlensing events, millions of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been monitored for one decade and only a dozen of events have been detected. The low number of events causes ambiguities in studying the mean mass of MACHOs and their contribution to the Milky Way halo mass due to Poisson fluctuation. The results obtained by the microlensing experiments, ...

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Is the Galactic Halo Baryonic ?

Recent observations of microlensing events in the Large Magel-lanic Cloud suggest that a sizeable fraction of the galactic halo is in the form of Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs) with mass less than about 0.1M ⊙. Here we argue that molecular clouds (mainly of H 2) located in the galactic halo can contribute substantially to its total mass. We outline a scenario in which dark ...

Not Enough Stellar Mass Machos in the Galactic Halo

We present an update of results from the search for microlensing towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (lmc) by eros (Expérience de Recherche d'Objets Sombres). We have now monitored 25 million stars over three years. Because of the small number of observed microlensing candidates (four), our results are best presented as upper limits on the amount of dark compact objects in the halo of our Galaxy...
